A Note from Kate

Welcome to all our new readers! A special warm welcome goes out to those of you whom I have met through WomanOwned.com, Sta.rtUp.Biz and Facebook. It's an honor to have you as subscribers and I look forward to learning more about you. Please feel free to contact me at kate@vivacitynow.com and let me know about your enterprise.

I had the great opportunity to have my new website audited by Bob Regnerus, “The Leads King”. Bob is the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) genius behind the websites of Dan Kennedy, Bill Glazer, Alexandria Brown, Miracle Ear® and the Dartmouth School of Business, to name but a few. The Website Critique is complete and the feedback was great! I am very grateful to the guidance of one of my main mentors, Ali Brown, who helped me understand the basics of designing a website that markets for me and to Royal Blue Productions for putting it all in place. Bob's suggestions for increasing traffic to my site are fabulous. Time to get implementing!

I consider Bob a valuable resource for the woman with an established enterprise who wants to take her web presence...and therefore her business...to a whole new level. If you are interested in getting one of Bob's Website and Traffic Critiques for your site, go to http://theleadsking.com.

A Jumping-Off Point™

"A Tale of Two Networking Experiences"

"By going back to your own center you can always find the pure idea of right for every relationship."
– Wallace D. Wattles, The Science of Being Great

I had a couple experiences over this past month that made see networking at its best and at its...well, for the sake of taking the high road...less than optimal.

The Good:

One day a few weeks ago, I received an invitation from a woman via email to connect on a networking site that is strictly for people in business. We emailed back and forth a couple times, mentioning some of our newly discovered similarities. This person seemed warm, open and genuinely interested. I visited her website, she visited mine. When mention of her company's opportunity gently came up, I gave my regrets and we moved on. Several emails later, we are still networking, sharing information, supporting and promoting one another. She has a valuable service and her intention behind her business is a great one: to be a resource for people and to help them grow their businesses. I find myself willing to stay open to what she has to offer, though the opportunity is not right for me at this time.

The Less Than Optimal:

Quite recently, an email invitation arrived from another strictly business online networking site. The woman who sent it was part of a network marketing company to which I used to belong (past businesses are listed on this networking site – I had it listed there with my start and end dates). She was very enthusiastic about the company and product line in her email, and asked questions related to my being in the business...obviously enjoying the moment of camaraderie.

I emailed her back saying that I had happily been a part of the company for three years but was no longer able to use one of the major product lines and therefore was unable to keep up my distributorship. I told her that I still had immense respect for the company – both product-wise and in terms of their compensation plan. I truly had no regrets about being part of that company and really had learned a lot from the experience. And of course, I wished her much success.

When I received a lengthy reply from her, I had to shake my head...I was a bit confused! Obviously, when I said that I no longer was with the company, her zeal for her business overtook her ability to hear what I had to say. At that moment, I became a prospect and not a networking connection.

The first clue that she hadn't been “listening” came when she said that I probably had just tried the products for a couple months then gave up because I didn't get immediate results (I had said three years). Then there were hyperlinks, testimonials, facts, more urgings to look at the product and company...all in a big, loud color font. She then asked me to reply as to what my experience had been because she was truly intrigued and interested, not understanding why someone would actually stop using the products.

Now I was intrigued!! Though no explanation was owed, I replied only because I was truly curious as to what her reaction would be if I told her the valid reasons and shared a little about what a difficult decision it was leaving the company. Her response (this time quite short) was no surprise...there was no comment on the circumstances, just basically: Gee, you're the only person I know that this has happened to. But, in all fairness, she did wish me much success in my new business.

So...what was the lesson I learned (and will pay attention to as I continue to network) from this Tale of Two Networking Experiences?

  • Always listen to the other person (whether a networking contact or your client/customer) and pay attention to details.
  • If we come from “How can I help you?” or “How can I be of service?” then we can never lose.
  • Whether in networking or in sales, it's always about the other person.
  • Everyone wants to walk away from an experience feeling like they gained, not like they lost (Wallace Wattles called this “The Impression of Increase” in The Science of Getting Rich).
  • No matter how enthusiastic we are about our product or service and no matter how much we want to “help”, if we come on too strong, it's going to be a bit like the analogy of trying to take a drink from a fire hose. Your contact (or customer) will get overwhelmed by the experience and get very little out of it.

Approaching networking from the place of being a resource for others and “How can I be of help to you?” is a jumping-off point for your growth and success.

Resources for Your Enterprise

"Interview with an Expert"

Interview with an Expert is a new feature where experts will weigh in on subjects that pertain to and influence your enterprise.

One of the divisions of Vivacity is VCoaching™. Through that division, I am a coach to women who are either just starting to take an idea out into reality and into the marketplace or wanting to take an existing enterprise to a new level.

Two of the questions a woman just starting out in her enterprise frequently asks is “Do I need a website?” and “Couldn't I just do one myself?” Here is an answer from this month's expert Kris Hogan, a contact of mine on WomanOwned.com. Kris is the founder of Hodoorgan Web Design (www.hodoorgan.com) based in Tinley Park, IL. Here's her answer as part of an article she wrote entitled “Why Should I Have A Professional Website Designed For My Business?”:

My business is small. Could a website really be of any benefit?

The smaller the business, the more cost effective and useful a website can become. This is because smaller businesses are nearly always at a severe disadvantage when it comes to the budget available for advertising and promotional materials. However, an effective website really can help level the field.

To run a successful business you constantly have to think of ways to keep up with the pack or even better, think of a way that you can get the competitive edge on your rivals.

The most important aspect of your business is customer satisfaction. A few years ago a website was a luxury but now people expect that you should have one. The mere fact that you have a website puts you in a different league. It enables you to compete with your competition on a playing field of your choice

FACT: Local people use the Internet and often go online to get phone numbers, directions and general information.

Americans are spending more time than ever online. 80% of us now spend as much time online as we do watching television.

These same people seem to think that if they can't find something on the Internet that it doesn't exist. When looking for a service or a product, they search the internet. They search for reviews, opinions and other sites relating to the provider, so they know if they are going to get good value for their money.

Having a website is as essential today as having a business card or a telephone number.

An online presence is a necessity these days. If you don't have a website and your customers can't get information about your services or products then you're likely missing out on a substantial amount of potential business.

Your company's doors will now effectively be open to a global audience: 365 days a year, 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.

Your business is accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere. A website works for you even when you're not there. People can go to your website and learn about your business, your services or products, how to get in touch with you and even purchase your services or products.

Should you build and maintain your business Website yourself or pay someone to do it for you?

Is building and maintaining websites the key focus of your business? Could your time be better spent doing more important things like running your business? Every minute you spend on tasks that are not related to the key focus of your business is time spent to the detriment of your business.”
